Probe Sent to Pluto Was powered by Original PlayStation CPU!!

What if you got to know that your smartphones are much more powerful than the computers who landed man on Moon which became "The Giant leap for mankind". Incredible isn't it. Here's one more mind blowing fact about the space explorations of NASA.

It turns out that the Probe sent to the planet (or not a planet) Pluto back then in 2006 is powered by Original PlayStation' CPU!! It is interesting because the probe which is about to reach it's destination in 2015 is running on the CPU of PlayStation's 1994 model. The CPU itself is the MIPS R3000 CPU which was re-purposed by NASA back in 2006.

But why so old technology in this much bigger project? Actually NASA prefers relies on Old and tested technologies against the latest. Which is logically right thing to do because, you cannot sent a technician or engineer far away in space to fix if anything goes wrong. So, technology which has proved itself much more reliable has to be used even if it's that old.

It's turns out that NASA made a right choice. The probe was launched back in 2006 and its about to reach Pluto now in 2015 and it's quiet impressive for a chip which is a bit older than 2 decades.

Now you would look differently towards your PlayStation, proudly indeed.
